Hard Wax vs Soft Wax
We often get asked by clients “what is the difference between hard and soft wax?” and “which one is best for me?” When explaining the differences between the two, there are a couple of key distinctions to highlight. Most notably is the consistency of the waxes- hard wax is thicker and is removed as a film; soft wax is thinner so a strip is needed to pull away the applied wax. Below we breakdown differences between the two that will help you in your decision on which wax to use for your clients.
Hard Wax
- Strip free
- Generally less painful
- No sticky residue
- Works well on full body waxing
Soft Wax
- Can be applied at lower temperatures
- Doesn’t crack or break apart
- Uses cloth strips
- Works well on shorter hair

Over the past decade, hard wax has become more popular, with wax centers marketing it as “quick and pain free”. While getting waxed is usually not a favorite service for most, hard wax has boosted the industry and brought a fun, relaxing aspect to going fuzz-free. Common Misconceptions
Is soft wax super messy?
Soft wax often gets a bad rap for being messy. This can be prevented with proper pre- and post- care, creating a mess-free wax application.
Is hard wax only good for smaller areas?
No. I will say that there is a learning curve with how to properly lay larger lines of hard wax. This is why education and practice are so important.
Is hard wax more time consuming?
Absolutely not. It really comes down to your comfort level. With time and practice, you can become super-efficient when waxing with hard wax. o Key tip: proper hard wax temperature should resemble honey. Many hard waxes we carry have low melting points around 105*F.
