Interview with Melissa Mercado Founder of Holiday for Giving-Wallingford and Champion of The Skin Games Compassion Category

Melissa Mercado, a licensed esthetician from Wallingford, Connecticut, has significantly impacted both the beauty industry and her community. As the founder of The Skin & Body Network and Holiday for Giving-Wallingford, Melissa combines her expertise in skincare with a deep commitment to charity.

The Genesis of Holiday for Giving-Wallingford

Motivated by her extensive volunteer work, Melissa spearheaded “Holiday for Giving Wallingford, Inc.,” a 501c3 initiative that supports families during the holiday season. “This program helps families enjoy a festive season with food and gifts, despite financial hardships,” Melissa explains. Achieving 501c3 status has allowed the organization to enhance its fundraising capabilities and expand its outreach.

Triumph at The Skin Games

Melissa’s involvement in The Skin Games began in 2017, marking a significant chapter in her professional life. Despite Connecticut’s licensing challenges, she pursued certification in Rhode Island to compete. Over the years, she has competed in various categories, including acne, pigmentation, and spa decor, culminating in her role as a judge. However, her most significant achievement came in 2023 when she won the Compassion Category.

“Winning the $10,000 grand prize in the Compassion Category was a profound moment,” Melissa recalls. “It was not just a personal victory but a win for our entire community. The prize money has been pivotal in extending our charitable efforts, allowing us to reach even more families in need.”

The Mission Behind Holiday for Giving

Holiday for Giving goes beyond distributing gifts; it’s about creating a support system for the holiday season. “We collaborate with local churches, schools, and social services to find and assist families in need,” says Melissa. This comprehensive approach helped support approximately 900 individuals last year through careful planning and community collaboration.

Expanding Impact with New Initiatives

The funds from The Skin Games have enabled new projects, including a year-round toy drive initiated this July. “Using the prize money, we’ve rented a storage unit to collect donations all year, helping us prepare better for the holiday season,” Melissa details. This strategic development ensures a steady supply of resources to aid families consistently.

How to Get Involved

Melissa encourages those interested in supporting Holiday for Giving to visit their website or engage via social media. “We have Amazon wish lists for toys and food, and we welcome monetary donations throughout the year,” she states, highlighting the multiple ways the community can contribute.

Personal Insights and Encouragements

Despite her achievements and frequent travels, Melissa cherishes her time at home with her family the most. She motivates others to step out of their comfort zones, especially in competitive arenas like The Skin Games. “You will never get ahead if you do not take the risk,” a piece of advice from her father that she holds dear and has guided her through many challenges.

Through her leadership at Holiday for Giving and her success in The Skin Games, Melissa Mercado exemplifies the impact of merging passion with purpose, inspiring others to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
